Today Brooklyn-based Pop artist Sophie Colette drops her new pop anthem Don’t Worry. It’s her first release since 2019 and although it may have been a bit of a wait, I think it’s worth it.

Fans of Sophie Colette will be familiar with her ability to inspire and uplift through her music, and Don’t Worry is no exception to this. An understated introduction driven by piano and vocals wastes little time in revealing the heart of the song to be a head-nodding, toe-tapping ballad.

As the song builds, I can already see myself moving to the music in a bar or a club on a night out and once the energy levels in Don’t Worry are raised, they stay largely consistent throughout (short middle-eighth section notwithstanding). This would sometimes imply a song with little dynamic range, however, through the masterful use of subtle changes, Sophie Colette has managed to make a song that is both consistent and engaging.

The vocals in particular, drift in and out of sequence with the piano line in a way that highlights each in turn. There is space here for each instrument to shine and it feels like every note, every word, has been placed with the greatest of care. Nothing is unnecessary, everything is important.

“I wanted to write a song I could dance to, to shake off negativity, and get myself out of bed to make that cup of coffee in the morning and get dressed. I needed it as my own antidote to loneliness and self doubt. It became a reminder that I could be my own cheerleader and push myself out of a funk.” – Sophie Colette

If I were to offer one criticism of Don’t Worry, it would be that the ending feels a little out of keeping with the rest of the song. On one hand, it’s a swift exit that’s an understandable nod to the introduction and it does serve to keep the overall length under the widely accepted ‘3-minute limit’, but to me, it’s just a little too hasty in a song that otherwise has so much breathing room in it.

Overall, I found that Don’t Worry invokes the feeling of sitting on a hill watching the sun rise over the city. It is an anthem for anyone wanting to take some time to think about what is going on in their lives. It’s a hand on your shoulder letting you know you can make the change you need. You can make a difference. Telling you that you are enough.

I certainly know I’ve had times when I needed to hear that and I’m thankful that artists like Sophie Colette are producing songs like Don’t Worry so that anyone that needs to can hear it at the click of a few buttons.
